Our bodies are made up of about 60% water. Each of our cells, organs, and tissues need water to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions.
We constantly lose water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, this is why it’s super important to rehydrate our bodies by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water.
Most people do not drink enough water for a variety of reasons:
1- they do not like the taste ( too plain)
2- they feel uncomfortable having to urinate too frequently
3- they do not feel thirsty
4- it’s just not a habit
I can totally identify with all the reasons above to not drink water because it was my reality 12 years ago too.
However, When we lack adequate hydration levels we can experience the following symptoms:
I experienced all of these, and at that time I didn’t know why it was happening, but when I learned that most of these things were attributed to not drinking enough water I made the decision to start developing a new good habit.
There are many ways to hydrate the body. We do not have to limit ourselves to just drinking plain water. you can get water from teas (unsweetened) fruits like watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, grapefruit etc. and vegetables like: cucumbers, lettuce, celery, radish , tomatoes, spinach, watercress, etc. and liquids like infused water and electrolyte drinks.
It’s best to avoid drinks that even though they are water based, they contain excessive amounts of simple sugars and heavily alcoholic and/or caffeinated drinks because these have the opposite effect and dehydrate the body quickly.
When I started my healthy lifestyle transformation journey with Herbalife Nutrition, a great way to help me get in my daily water intake was to add the Herbal Aloe Concentrate to my water. I initially started with the original flavor and then as the new Mango and Cranberry flavored Aloe Concentrates were launched now I started incorporating them as well. Today, I developed the healthy hydration habit and I enjoy all three and alternate them everyday!
Another one of my favorites is the Herbal Tea Concentrate and Green Tea. I drink tea throughout the day not only to hydrate but also to gently boost my energy.
Hydrating during exercise is extremely important! Many only drink plain water when exercising, but due to the rapid loss of essential minerals and electrolytes in our sweat, plain water can actually flush out those salts that are needed to regulate temperature, heart rate etc. quicker. The majority of sports drinks do have the electrolytes we need to replenish but they are also loaded with calories and sugar.
